Hypnotherapy is usually considered to be a short term therapy and is different to counselling and psychotherapy, in that it is the only talking therapy that works primarily with the subconscious mind. Hypnotherapy, or healing by natural trance, has been around in one form or another for a very long time, and it can be argued, was the first talking therapy.
Hypnotherapy is very good at dealing with fears and phobias, confidence and self-esteem, as well as managing anxiety and stress. It can be used to help performance anxieties, like giving speeches and presentations or going to interviews. It can help such random things as blushing, IBS or insomnia. It can even help you get rid of those blocks that stop you achieving the things you want most. These are just a few of the things that it can help with.
When the word hypnotherapy is mentioned, people often jump to the image they are familiar with, that of a stage hypnotist. People can then become worried about hypnotherapy because they do not want to lose control and "run around squawking like a chicken". In reality this is not what hypnotherapy is about. Hypnotherapy is about giving you back control, so for example, if you can rid yourself of a fear of flying, it opens up the world to you. You can go on holiday, travel abroad with work or even relocate to another country. You are no longer controlled by your fear and have taken back control of your life.
Hypnotherapy induces a deep state of relaxation (both physically and psychologically), a natural trance. Whilst the client is in this relaxed state it allows the hypnotherapist to work with the client's subconscious in order to communicate with the client's conscious mind, to reach the goals they have set for their therapy and bring about the changes the client wants. The client is in control at all times and the therapist will work with the images, events and memories etc. which are meaningful to the client.
Can anyone be hypnotised? This is a question hypnotherapists are asked repeatedly. Almost everyone has had times where they have drifted away in a daydream or driven a car somewhere and then wondered how they got there. Hypnosis is just a deliberate, deeper state of this process and, therefore, the answer is yes almost everyone can be hypnotised. Clients do not have to be in a very deep trance for hypnotherapy to work.
Often people assume hypnotherapy does all the work and it magically removes all of a client's problems. Whilst hypnotherapy can be very helpful other factors are also helpful. Primarily a client needs to be motivated to change and choosing the right therapist is essential.
